Fine Arts

The Truman Middle School Band Program gives students the opportunity to learn a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument while developing music-reading skills, confidence, teamwork, and ensemble musicianship. Students participate in concerts and special performances throughout the school year.

Band instruments are available for students to check out from the program free of charge.

Beginning Band

Beginning Band is designed for students with little or no previous band experience. Students learn the fundamentals of playing an instrument, reading music, and performing as part of an ensemble.

Intermediate Band

Intermediate Band is designed for second-year band students who are ready to expand their musical knowledge and performance skills. Students strengthen their instrumental technique through ensemble rehearsals, individual practice, and performance opportunities.

Advanced Band

Advanced Band is designed for experienced band students who are ready to strengthen their instrumental technique, musical independence, and ensemble performance skills. Students study more challenging music and participate in a variety of performance opportunities.

Jumpstart Band

Jumpstart Band meets after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00–4:00 p.m. in the Band Room, B105. Students may receive extra help, practice their instruments, prepare music, and strengthen their performance skills.

Jumpstart Band is open to:

• All students currently enrolled in band
• Band students who have been temporarily placed in an intervention class
• Other students with approval from Ms. Stott

Choir is a welcoming place for students to discover and develop their singing voices while learning how to make music as an ensemble. Students build skills in healthy vocal technique, rhythm and music reading, listening, blend, teamwork, and performance while growing in confidence as singers and musicians. No previous singing experience is required, just a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and sing together!

Drama is a hands-on class where students build confidence, creativity, and communication skills through improvisation, acting, character development, storytelling, and scene work. Students learn to collaborate, make bold choices, use their voices and bodies to communicate, and grow as performers through rehearsal and performance. No previous theatre experience is needed, just a willingness to participate, take creative risks, and try something new!

Drama Club

The Guardians Drama Club meets after school on Wednesday from 3:00-4:10 in the Drama Room (B102).  This is an opportunity to explore drama, expand your skills, and be part of bigger productions each semester. Hosted by Mr. Martel and Ms. Loucks.

Mariachi is a fun class where students will learn the fundamentals of mariachi music through singing and playing traditional instruments, including trumpet, violin, guitar, vihuela, and guitarron. The class will focus on proper instrument and singing technique, music reading, musical skills, teamwork, and performing as an ensemble. 

Orchestra is a supportive class where students learn to play string instruments, including violin, viola, cello, and bass. Students will develop musical skills through learning proper technique, reading music, and performing as an ensemble. No matter their experience level, students will build confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation for music. 

The Truman Middle School Visual Arts Program gives students the opportunity to explore drawing, painting, sculpture, design, and other creative art forms while developing artistic skills, creativity, confidence, and self-expression. Students learn a variety of techniques and have opportunities to create and share their artwork throughout the school year.

6th Grade Beginning Art 

Beginning Art is a program designed for 6th grade students who want to explore using different types of art materials to express themselves. Students can explore their unique voice in a fun and open space where "mistakes" are happy accidents and growth is part of the fun! 

Art I

Art I is designed for 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in exploring the world of art. Students learn about the fundamental elements of art and use them to guide their art making practice as well as their understanding of the artwork of others. Students dive in and hone their skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and more! 

Art II 

For students who want to expand their artistic skill to prepare for highschool, Art II provides a deeper understanding of the elements and design principles of art. Students will use their personal voice to guide their expression. They will collaborate with each other to create a community of artists within the classroom. They will work with clay, paint, and mixed media to sharpen their skills and foster the artist within.
